And what makes Inkscape such a great tool for creating something like this is that it’s easier to work with gradients in Inkscape than it is in any other application. This techinique can be applied to virtually any vector object. That is how you can create a gold effect with Inkscape! ConclusionĬreating a gold effect with Inkscape is simply a matter of applying the right gradients, offsets, and a drop shadow. Go ahead and place your finished gold text on top of a dark backdrop to make it pop even more:Īnd that should do it for this lesson. This really makes the gold text pop off the page, making for a great final touch. This is done by create a duplicate copy of the text, making it black, positioning it beneath the original text, and giving it a blur: The final step in making our gold text with Inkscape is to add a drop shadow beneath the text. It’ll be given a gradient from white to transparent to make it look like reflective light. This process is too complicated to explain through written text so you’ll have to check out the video tutorial above. To do this, we’ll create a copy of the gold text, inset it, and then intersect it with an ellipse placed over the top third of the text. Next, we’ll be adding a shine - or reflective light effect. This acts as somewhat of a bevel and helps sell the gold effect. The duplicate copy will be placed beneath the original text, and it will be given the same gradient that was given to the original text, only in reverse: In order to make this look more like gold material, we’re going to create a duplicate of the text and apply a stroke that will act as somewhat of an offset. Here’s how the text looks with the gold gradient applied: These five colors, when used in order (from top to bottom) in a linear gradient, create the illusion of gold: In order for this gold effect to look right it’s important that we use the following five shades in our gradient: Next, we’ll apply a linear gradient with 5 stops. Note if you hold down control while doing this it will ensure the gradient will be applied along an exactly vertical axis. You can apply this gold effect to another object if you’d like though. Add a gradient to the text by clicking at the top of the text and dragging the mouse to the bottom of the text. Click on the blend tool, and change the shape to Linear and the gradient to FG to BG. Next, create a new layer which we'll use to add the text colour to, rather than overwriting the text layer.Ĭhange the foreground color to a dark blue(I used 0a6a7e) and the background colour to an even darker blue (I used less 063e4a). Right click on the text layer in the layer dialog and click "alpha to selection". I recommend to colourize the 3D effect text to white via Colors > Colorize, because the borders of the letters. I used caf0f8 with these settings:įinally, we need to add some dark colour to the text itself to make it look like it is below the surrounding colour. Next, we'll create a slight highlight effect on the far side of the text select the text layer again and select Script-Fu->layer effects->drop shadow. Select Script-Fu->layer effects->inner shadow. First, create the shadow inside the text on the edge facing the light source. Make sure for each of the next steps that the text layer is selected when applying the filter. Now it's time to create the inset text effect. Type your text and arrange it in the center using the alignment tool. The colour of the font doesn't matter as we're going to overwrite it in a bit. I'm using Times New Roman, Bold with a font size of 60px. Select the text tool and choose a thick font. Adjust the layer transparency to something that looks fairly subtle. Change the gradient to FG to transparent and the shape to "radial".Ĭreate a light source on the top left of the new layer. Set the layer fill type to 'transparency'. (If the layers dialog isn't open, you can open it via windows->dockable dialogues->Layers). Now we need to create the light source, so create a new layer for this by right clicking on the current layer and selecting "new layer". Create the background gradient by clicking at the top of the image and dragging to the bottom. Choose the blend tool with a FG to BG gradient. I used 22c3e6 for the foreground and 0c7c94 for the background. Set the foreground colour to light blue, and the background colour to a darker blue. Create a new project with width 550px and height 250px Once you've installed Script-Fu layer effects you're ready to start. The first half of this video explains how to do this. First of all, you will need to install Script-Fu layer effects if you haven't already.
